The telecom PLI initiative saw a total investment of ₹3,998 crore, while overall sales hit ₹68,708 crore by October 31, 2024 (which includes exports valued at ₹13,007 crore), resulting in jobs for 25,359 people, Mittal told sources. He has also said that the DoT is working aggressively on curbing cellular spam calls originating from multiple overseas destinations. "We have also taken the initiative of prevention of international spoof calls. This will be further strengthened. The telecom service providers are also taking their own initiatives in this direction," he said.
In February 2021, the DoT announced the PLI scheme to promote local manufacturing, exports, and investments in telecom and networking products with a provision of ₹12,195 crore. The program started on April 1, 2021, and will last for five years.
Spam and scam calls via voice over internet protocol applications, especially the widely used messaging app WhatsApp, have turned into a problem, causing numerous individuals to fall victim to fraudsters.
Recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India requested the intervention of the electronics and information technology ministry, which subsequently reprimanded WhatsApp's parent company Meta, previously known as Facebook. "Sanchar Saathi facilitates citizens to report suspected fraud communication and Unsolicited Commercial Communication or spam," Mittal said. He said the DoT "is aware about the need or demand of 6GHz spectrum for both Wi-Fi and mobile services" and added that it is working with all stakeholders "to find an optimal and best possible" solution.
