Tata Steel announced that it has emerged as India's first steel manufacturer to create pipes designed for hydrogen transport, signifying an important achievement in the nation’s hydrogen initiative. According to a statement from the company, the pipes produced at Tata Steel's Khopoli facility with steel made at its Kalinganagar site have successfully fulfilled all essential properties needed for hydrogen transport.

The entire technology development process, from creating and fabricating hot-rolled steel to manufacturing the pipes, was conducted entirely within the company, showcasing Tata Steel's capability to provide essential energy infrastructure.

In 2024, Tata Steel emerged as the first Indian steel manufacturer to create hot-rolled steel for the transport of gaseous hydrogen.

"The hydrogen qualification tests were conducted at RINA-CSM S.p.A, Italy, a prominent certification body for testing and characterising hydrogen," the statement noted.

The recently developed hydrogen-compliant API X65 grade pipes are suitable for transporting 100 percent pure gaseous hydrogen at high pressures (100 bar), it stated.

Prabhat Kumar, vice-president - marketing & sales (flat products), Tata Steel, said, "Tata Steel has always been at the forefront of developing technologies for manufacturing critical steel grades. The successful testing of the new ERW pipes demonstrates our capabilities to deliver critical physical infrastructure for the energy sector, domestically. We are proud to contribute to India's National Hydrogen Mission, which by itself is a key component of the country's ongoing clean energy transition."
