Silicon Carbide Plant to Launch in Odisha with ₹618.60 Crore Investment

India’s first silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturing facility will come up in Odisha with an funding of ₹618.60 crore. The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved a proposal to this effect on Wednesday.

According to the cabinet's approval, RIR Power Electronics Limited (RIR) will establish a Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor production facility in Odisha. The cabinet has sanctioned a tailored incentive program for the project. It will be established at the Electronic Manufacturing Cluster Park located in Info Valley, Bhubaneswar.

The state government asserted that this initiative is set to establish Odisha as a frontrunner in India’s semiconductor landscape, fostering industrial expansion, enhancing local supply chains, and creating skill development opportunities.

The facility will specialize in SiC-based devices, serving electric vehicles, renewable energy, railways, and defense, and is projected to generate 750 jobs. According to a statement, this will be the first compound semiconductor fabrication facility in India, greatly improving local manufacturing capacities.

Official sources stated that the Odisha government will emphasize semiconductor and artificial intelligence at the forthcoming Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, the state’s biennial investment summit, set to take place on January 28-29.

The India Semiconductor Market is projected to attain USD 271.9 Billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 25.7% from 2022 to 2032. Given its vast customer base and increasing demand for electronic products like smartphones, tablets, and various IoT gadgets, India has significant growth potential in the semiconductor industry.
