Revamping National Policy on Electronics To Promote manufacturing
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) intends to update the National Policy on Electronics 2019 (NPE 2019) to revitalize India's electronics manufacturing industry and boost exports. This revision intends to solve the industry's present issues while also aligning with the goal of earning $400 billion in revenue from electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) by 2025.
The Union Cabinet first approved this scheme five years ago. MeitY's 2022 vision paper aimed to integrate India into global value chains, resulting in a $300 billion production value by the fiscal year 2025-26 and $130 billion in exports. However, current estimates suggest that the existing approach may fall far short of these objectives. In FY24, India's electronics exports were $30 billion, while manufacturing was $115 billion.
MeitY has formed a working group to help domestic electronics manufacture and encourage the expansion of the domestic capital industry. This group will concentrate on a variety of crucial areas, including mobile phones, IT hardware, capital goods, components, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, medical electronics, industrial and strategic electronics, closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), wearable and hearable devices, and LED lighting.
The working group consists of prominent industry associations such as the India Cellular and Electronics Association, Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology, Confederation of Indian Industry, Electronic Industries Association of India, and Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association. They will work together to address the sector's difficulties and enhance industry growth.
