Reliance Industries To begin operations at Battery Gigafactory by 2026
Oil-to-telecoms conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd expects to begin production at its upcoming battery Gigafactory in the second half of next year, as per the firm's Chairman Mukesh Ambani. The facility, with a yearly output of 30 GWh, will start by putting together battery systems and packs before moving on to cell production and chemical manufacturing.
"We have already begun construction of an integrated advanced chemistry-based battery manufacturing facility with a 30 GWh annual capacity at Jamnagar. Production will commence by the second half of next year," Ambani told investors at the company’s annual general meeting.
The establishment is being constructed at Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex, which covers 5,000 acres in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company has established a pilot line with a 50 MWh annual capacity to produce lithium-ion battery cells, under its subsidiary Lithium Werks, which can be expanded for commercial production.
"We will start by assembling Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for utility-scale applications and pack solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, telecom and mobility markets. Progressively, over the next few quarters, we will integrate backward to cell manufacturing and eventually to battery chemicals production," he said.
Reliance Industries has met the requirements for the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) program for advanced chemistry cell battery manufacturing and has been assigned a capacity of 5 GWh under the program. The company has applied for an additional 10 GWh capacity through the program.
