PLI Schemes Propel India's Manufacturing and Atmanirbhar Bharat' Mission
India's ambitious Product-Linked Incentive (PLI) programs are establishing new standards in manufacturing and exports, backing the aspirational 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative with more than Rs1.97 lakh crore in incentives. Initiated in November 2020 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, these programs encompass 14 essential sectors and have reached notable milestones.
The initiatives have attracted investments of Rs1.46 lakh crore and encouraged production and sales worth Rs12.50 lakh crore, along with an impressive Rs4 lakh crore in exports. By FY 2023-24, they have employed 9.5 lakh people both directly and indirectly, providing Rs9,721 crore in incentives, which highlights their significant influence on India's manufacturing sector.
Developing into a national force, the PLI schemes encompass manufacturing industries such as Mobile, Pharmaceuticals, Automobiles, Specialty Steel, and Telecom. Spread throughout the country, more than 1,300 manufacturing facilities now span 27 states and union territories, overseen by 10 ministries and departments, highlighting industrial progress on a national level.
A crucial factor has been the drivers for the MSME ecosystem, with anchor units establishing a strong supplier foundation. The rising need for MSMEs is expected to enhance value chains. Notable achievements include the PLI initiative for White Goods, achieving 47% of its investment objective and complete employment targets, with expected substantial enhancements in domestic value addition.
Fueled by robust industrial support, emerging applications worth Rs4,121 crore indicate ongoing growth. Targeting sectors such as Mobile and Electronic Components, Pharmaceuticals, Automobiles, and others, the PLI initiatives are set to support India's manufacturing growth.
