The Morigaon branch plays a crucial role in driving socio-economic development by creating 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000-13,000 indirect employment opportunities, aiding in the economic progress of Assam and surrounding regions. The facility's high production capacity will provide daily output for domestic and international markets, establishing India as a strong competitor in the global semiconductor supply chain, according to the statement.

India's impressive progress in the semiconductor sector is highlighted by the establishment of a semiconductor facility in Morigaon, Assam, led by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT). The Indian semiconductor market is expected to reach around $38 billion in 2023, with forecasts suggesting a rise to $109 billion by 2030.

In order to support the rapid growth and decrease dependence on imports, the Indian government has introduced various programs to encourage local production of semiconductors. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) strives to establish a viable semiconductor and display industry that will elevate India's status in electronics manufacturing and design. According to the statement, ISM works with global semiconductor specialists to organize collaboration among government ministries, industry, and academic institutions for effective allocation of resources and assistance.

Introduced in 2021 with an investment of Rs 76,000 crore, the Semicon India initiative aims to boost the local semiconductor sector with incentives and strategic alliances. This program aids different parts of the semiconductor sector, going beyond just fabrication facilities (fabs) to encompass packaging, display wires, Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSATs), sensors, and other vital components, developing a full ecosystem.
