Lenovo aims to increase its smart phones and laptop production in India to double the count this fiscal year from the 6.4 million units produced locally in 2023-24, stated Shailendra Katyal, managing director of Lenovo India.

Katyal mentioned that the company will keep increasing local production annually, even as it begins to set up manufacturing for nearly all its personal computer models in India, having already reached 100% local production for its Motorola smartphones.

Lenovo, with dual headquarters in Beijing and North Carolina, USA, has been quickly increasing its production in India after joining the government's production linked incentive program and responding to the government's encouragement for global brands to manufacture more locally. For example, in the years 2022-23, it had manufactured five million units domestically.

“We are on target to locally produce over 12 million units in India this fiscal (24-25) as compared to 6.4 million units in FY24. This will help us to taper down imports progressively. We are also developing the component eco-system in India,” said Katyal. He said in the next fiscal (25-26), the local production will grow by 40% of what it will be in the current fiscal.

Lenovo currently manufactures laptops and desktops at its factory in Puducherry, where it will soon begin the production of artificial intelligence servers. Meanwhile, Dixon Technologies, a contract manufacturer, produces Motorola smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
