JSW Energy Revises Target, Aims for 30 GW Generation Capacity by 2030
With an infrastructure of about US$24 billion in the JSW Group, JSW Energy raises its power generation target from 20 GW to 30 GW. It plans to achieve this capacity by FY30-if not sooner. The current capacity stands at 12.2 GW compared to 10.8 GW as of FY25, which is complemented by an additional pipeline for execution until 2030 of about 18 GW.
This is a 20 GW generation and a total of 40 GWh storage target initially earmarked in the Strategy 2.0, which was launched three years ago. Having successfully achieved this interim milestone of an early completion on its 10 GW, JSW Energy is up for a launch of Strategy 3.0 within the weeks to come that will feature new updated targets and capital expenditure (capex) projections.
Sharad Mahendra, Joint MD and CEO, stated that the management is extremely confident of achieving the 20 GW mark well ahead of FY30. Pritesh Vinay, Director-Finance stated that ₹1.15 trillion has been reserved in 2023 under Strategy 2.0 for the targets, with Strategy 3.0 projected to go above that. Since 2023 ₹16,000-17,000 crore has gone towards its organic growth, whereas ₹29,000 crore has been spent on acquisitions like KSK Mahanadi and O2 Power.
Chief among them is the 1,600 MW thermal plant being built at Salboni, West Bengal, with ₹16,000 crore of backing investment. It was unveiled during the Bengal Global Business Summit and marks JSW's largest-ever greenfield investment and a key push into eastern India. Competitive bidding was used for the award of the plant, which is expected to be fully operational in a maximum of four years. The foundation stone will be laid by the WB CM Mamata Banerjee and JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal.
