According to a top executive of a global corporation, India's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme will help the manufacturing ecosystem, improve production capacity, and provide job possibilities in India.

"The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is a significant initiative that will undoubtedly boost the manufacturing industry, enhance production capacities and generate more employment opportunities," Rob Campbell, President, Communications, Enterprise and Cloud at Flex said.

Flex, previously Flextronics International, is one of the world's major EMS and ODM companies. Campbell added that India's massive domestic market, combined with access to one of the world's greatest skilled talent pools, provides a strategic edge.

"To fully capitalise on this momentum, it is imperative for India to further strengthen its component and semiconductor ecosystem."

In April 2020, the Centre approved the PLI plan for large-scale electronics production, and on May 29, 2023, it notified PLI 2.0 for IT hardware to stimulate domestic manufacturing and attract big-ticket investments in the value chain. Flex, led by Revathi Advaithi, is an Apple iPhone component supplier in India with headquarters in Cupertino.

Flex, founded in the United States, is a $24 billion diversified manufacturing corporation with almost 150,000 employees spread across 30 countries. In India, it employs about 10,000 people to support manufacturing operations, worldwide business services, and after-market services.

"The recent strides in nurturing the ecosystem through a phased manufacturing policy are noteworthy, as they establish a strong foundation for indigenisation," the top executive said.

According to him, India's self-reliance goal has laid the groundwork for the manufacturing sector and has enormous potential to develop the country into a preferred manufacturing location for complex items.
