India Nears Self-Reliance with 99% of Mobile Handsets Made Domestically
India has reached an important landmark in the production of mobile handsets. Almost 99% of the devices utilized in the nation are currently produced locally. This information was disclosed in Parliament by the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada. He remarked that the local electronics industry has experienced significant expansion in the last ten years.
During the fiscal year 2014-15, around 74% of the mobile phones sold in India were brought in from other countries. Currently, India produces 99.2% of its mobile phones locally. This change illustrates India's expanding skills in electronics production and its rise as a mobile exporter.
Jitin Prasada mentioned that the electronics industry has generated around 2.5 million jobs, both directly and indirectly. This increase is linked to several government efforts designed to enhance the sector.
India's electronics production value rose from Rs 1,90,366 crore in FY 2014-15 to Rs 9,52,000 crore in FY 2023-24. This signifies a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 17%. The nation has changed from being a significant importer of mobile phones to becoming an exporter.
The government has introduced the Semicon India initiative with an investment of Rs 76,000 crore. This initiative seeks to enhance the semiconductor and display production ecosystem in the nation. Furthermore, there are additional programs designed to assist large-scale electronics and IT hardware production.
