
India and Argentina Sign MoU for Lithium Exploration & Mining
India and Argentina formalized an agreement to enhance collaboration in the exploration and resource development of critical minerals, especially lithium, as stated in an official announcement.
The Ministry of Mines stated that both sides discussed about enhancing collaboration in the mining industry, especially regarding lithium exploration and investment prospects. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was executed in the presence of the Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy and the Governor of Catamarca, Argentina, Ral Alejandro Jalil.
"A key highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a PSU under the Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina, which will pave the way for deeper collaboration in exploration and resource development of critical minerals," it said.
The discussion focused on the current lithium exploration activities by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) & Greenko in Catamarca and the potential for greater engagement of Indian firms in Argentina's mining projects.
Both sides investigated options for investment, long-term supply contracts, and joint ventures that would enhance India's access to this essential mineral, it stated.
Senior representatives from both sides participated in discussions regarding policy structures, regulatory aspects, and sustainable mining methods to establish a mutually advantageous collaboration.
Moreover, there was a significant focus on the transfer of knowledge and infrastructure assistance to boost India's involvement in Argentina's mining industry.
