Hyundai India Localizes 1,200+ Components to Boost Manufacturing
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that it is localising more than 1,200 components, including battery packs, as a key aspect of its manufacturing approach during the Bharat Mobility Expo currently taking place in New Delhi.
The firm, which has reached as much as 92 percent localization in production, has begun local assembly of battery packs in collaboration with Mobis India at a newly established facility within HMIL's Sriperumbudur manufacturing site.
The Hyundai Creta electric is the initial model to feature battery packs assembled locally from the factory. The localisation initiatives of the Korean firm have resulted in forex savings of USD 672 million (over Rs 5,678 crore) since 2019, generating direct job opportunities for more than 1,400 individuals. HMIL collaborates with over 194 suppliers to localize more than 1,238 components at its manufacturing plant in Chennai.
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, whole-time director and chief manufacturing officer - HMIL, stated, "The launch of the battery-pack assembly plant for HMIL and Mobis India is an important milestone in our localization and electric vehicle strategy." In the first phase, the facility has a yearly production capacity of 75,000 battery packs. The facility is capable of producing a variety of battery packs, such as NMC (Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt Oxide) and LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) types. The battery-pack assembly facility will aid in reducing battery expenses for HMIL and enhance battery accessibility for its EVs manufactured in India, the firm stated in a release.
