The food processing industry's production-linked incentive (PLI) has created over 2.89 lakh jobs (as of October 31), the government stated. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries stated that an investment of Rs 8,910 crore has been made in 213 locations throughout the country.

The Union Cabinet approved the PLI scheme for the Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) on March 31, 2021, with a budget of ₹10,900 crore, set to be executed from 2021-22 to 2026-27.

The ministry reported that approximately 171 applicants have been registered under the scheme. The beneficiary selection process for PLISFPI was carried out as a single initiative, following proactive engagement with stakeholders and widespread communication to promote extensive involvement.

The Ministry stated that by requiring the use of locally-grown agricultural products (excluding additives, flavors, and edible oils) in production, the initiative has significantly boosted the procurement of local raw materials, aiding underdeveloped and rural regions while enhancing farmers' earnings.

"Furthermore, the emphasis on local production of raw materials for processed food has generated additional off-farm employment opportunities, significantly contributing to the economic development of rural regions," the Ministry emphasised.

The program has greatly aided the nation's total growth and development by increasing local manufacturing, improving value addition, elevating domestic production of raw materials, and generating job opportunities.
