The Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and additional public-sector organizations represented 79.2 percent of the overall production, whereas the private sector made up 20.8 percent. Both sectors experienced consistent growth, emphasizing the success of public-private partnerships in meeting the industry's goals. The government aims for a bold goal of achieving Rs 3 lakh crore in defence manufacturing by 2029.

Alongside local manufacturing, India’s defence exports reached a record peak of Rs 21,083 crore ($2.63 billion) in FY 2023-24, showing a 32.5 percent rise from the last fiscal year. This marks a 31 times rise in comparison to export levels from a decade earlier in FY 2013-14. The private sector and DPSUs accounted for 60 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively, towards this achievement. The government is hopeful about reaching its export goal of Rs 50,000 crore by the year 2029.

To promote this growth, the Ministry of Defence implemented simplified export processes, such as Open General Export Licenses (OGEL), which enable quicker approvals. Moreover, an online EXIM portal was created to oversee export opportunities and link Indian producers with international markets. In 2024, this portal distributed a total of 153 export leads.
