DoT Prioritizes Local Firms for 5G Tech in Public Contracts
The DoT has revised its public procurement policy to give preference to local companies capable of manufacturing 5G technology products on a large scale. The goal of the initiative is to boost the production of domestic 5G technology in India by providing local companies with a competitive edge when bidding for public sector projects against foreign competitors.
According to reports, Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of Telecom, stated that India's aim of becoming a top telecom technology provider is highlighted in the new policy. He said that as Indian companies increase their ability to produce these items on a large scale, they will receive priority in Make in India (MII) procurement orders, guaranteeing that these products are obtained from within the country.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had outlined a set of 36 products in its preliminary public procurement rules that must have at least 50% domestic content to be eligible for government purchases, with a focus on promoting Make in India. Initially, domestic companies were worried when 5G technology products were left out. The latest regulations now incorporate this clause for 5G goods, recognizing that these innovations are currently undergoing trials in India.
As per the notification from the DoT, Table-A, which is the list of products, will be regularly assessed for potential inclusion of 5G products and virtual routers depending on manufacturing capabilities. Domestic manufacturers are recommended to present proof of their manufacturing capacity to back up the incorporation of more products.
