Dixon Technologies To manufacture Google Pixel 8 Smartphones in India
Dixon Technologies will build Alphabet Inc's premium Google Pixel 8 smartphones in the nation. The inaugural batch of India-made phones would be ready in the market by September, as per sources. Trial production has recently begun.
Alphabet said in October last year that it would manufacture Google Pixel smartphones in India, making it the only major global smartphone brand that has not previously engaged in the country's smartphone manufacturing effort.
Dixon's Pixel smartphone production capacity will increase to 100,000 units per month, with an estimated 25-30% allocated for export, as the company resumes its efforts to win market share in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market.
According to the report, officials estimate that the Pixel 8 model accounts for almost 80% of all Pixel sales in India. Currently, these devices are made in Asian countries like China and Vietnam. This move comes after Dixon's subsidiary, Padget Electronics, signed an arrangement with Taiwan's Compal Electronics to manufacture phones for Compal's customers. Compal is a global manufacturing partner of Google products.
Padget, a recipient of the government's mobile phone production-linked incentive (PLI) program, will manage Pixel device production and has presented Goog with competitive production rates.
