Consumer Electronics Sales Surge 6% in September Quarter
Consumer electronics sales increased by 6% in terms of value during the September quarter. Despite a decrease in volume, the value of mobile phone sales, mainly from premium and 5G phones, increased by 7% year-on-year, with this category being the biggest contributor.
Yet, there was a 12% increase in value and a 9% increase in volume for small domestic appliances in the last quarter. India's technology and durables market saw a significant boost, with big retailers playing a key role by accounting for 37% of the overall demand.
Smaller urban areas also contributed to the growth, supported by higher incomes and growing internet usage. Tier 3 cities experienced a 9% year-on-year increase in value, while tier 1 saw a 6% growth and tier 2 had 5%. Media tablet sales increased by 90% in tier 4 cities during the quarter.
NielsenIQ reported that sales of electronics like smartphones, TVs, and fridges were slow in volume but grew 10% in value in the first nine months of 2024, driven mainly by premium product sales in retail stores.
“This growth is fuelled by the shift toward connected, feature-rich appliances and smartphones, with a clear preference for products that offer both convenience and long-term value," said Anant Jain, head of customer success in tech and durables at NielsenIQ. He said the festive period also contributed to the growth, with more consumers timing their purchases to benefit from promotions and special offer.
