Centre Unveils Portal, Guidelines for Electronics Component Manufacturing
The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) guidelines and portal were created by the Center in an effort to draw significant domestic and international investment and build a robust component manufacturing ecosystem. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, unveiled the guidelines and portal.
The ECMS was first approved by the Union Cabinet, which was chaired by the Prime Minister. On April 8, 2025, the program was first announced. It seeks to promote India's objective of becoming a global center for electronics manufacturing, integrate Indian enterprises with Global Value Chains (GVCs), and build robust manufacturing capacities and capabilities.
With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 17% for production and more than 20% for exports, Vaishnaw stated during the launch event that India's electronics production has increased fivefold while exports have increased more than sixfold. He said that the electronics sector is set up for substantial growth, pointing to sectors like servers, laptops, mobile phones, and IT gear that have demonstrated robust growth.
Vaishnaw defined ECMS as a "horizontal scheme," explaining that its advantages would go beyond electronics to include industries like power, manufacturing, and automobiles. He underlined that a robust and comprehensive electronics manufacturing ecosystem is emerging nationwide.
The Minister emphasized the value of innovation and quality standards, noting that many businesses now have design teams and emphasizing that all parties involved must concentrate on enhancing internal design capabilities. Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of quality excellence, urged the industry to adopt Six Sigma standards, and threatened to "cut short" businesses that did not meet high standards.
