Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has reached an agreement with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to produce hydrogen using a 50 kW alkaline electrolyser system, as per the filing with the exchange.

BHEL developed the hydrogen generation technology in-house and relies significantly on locally sourced resources. Through this collaboration with BARC, BHEL hopes to scale develop and commercialize Indigenous Alkaline Electrolyser Technology for usage in industries such as refineries, fertilisers, steel, and transportation.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Jai Prakash Srivastava, Director (Engineering, Research, and Development), BHEL; K. Ravishankar, Executive Director (Corporate Technology Management and Corp R&D), BHEL; and Dr. S. Adhikari, Associate Director (Knowledge Management Group), BARC. This will be a stride forward in BHEL's commitment to the 'National Green Hydrogen Mission' and 'Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'.

By utilizing indigenous technology, BHEL wants to make a significant contribution to the development of sustainable hydrogen generation techniques, aiding India's transition to cleaner energy sources. The collaboration between BHEL and BARC is a significant step toward improving hydrogen technology and establishing a more sustainable future for the country.

Previously, BHEL was recognized by POWERGRID at the CEO Meet 2024 for its exceptional success in activating three main substations under the Neemuch REZ TBCB project ahead of schedule, despite initial challenges.
