Ashok Leyland Ltd. has obtained India's biggest electric truck order, in line with the government's efforts to electrify freight transportation. The company in Chennai is going to provide 180 electric trucks to Billion Electric Mobility Pvt., which runs ChargeZone EV charging stations. Priced at Rs 150 crore, the agreement includes the supply of 14- and 19-tonne BOSS electric trucks and a 55-tonne electric tractor by the end of the fiscal year's fourth quarter.

The range of BOSS electric trucks varies between 225-300 km per charge, depending on the specific model. The dual charging ports allow for a complete charge in only 60 minutes. Moreover, these vehicles can be easily modified to accommodate larger battery packs through battery swaps.

Ashok Leyland is planning to set up a specialized assembly line for electric trucks at its Hosur facility. This facility is projected to begin operating in the early part of next year with an initial production capability of 5,000 units per year. The decision highlights the company's dedication to broadening its range of electric vehicle options.

In spite of minimal existing EV production, Ashok Leyland's sole focus is on manufacturing electric trucks. At the same time, Switch Mobility, its sister company, will focus on manufacturing electric light commercial vehicles and buses. The Lucknow facility, scheduled to start production in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, will initially focus on producing electric buses exclusively.
