16.15 Lakh Electric Vehicles Benefit from FAME India-II Scheme
The government stated that 16.15 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) have received incentives through the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India-II scheme. It encompasses 14.27 lakh electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), 1.59 lakh electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), 22,548 electric four-wheelers (e-4Ws), and 5,131 electric buses.
Furthermore, 10,985 electric vehicle public charging stations (PCS) have been approved, with 8,812 designated for installation.
As of October 31, 2024, a total expenditure of INR 8,844 crore has been recorded, comprising INR 6,577 crore for subsidies, INR 2,244 crore for capital assets, and INR 23 crore for miscellaneous expenses, as reported by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The program features a phased manufacturing approach and has backed major policy measures, including lowering GST on EVs and facilitating state EV policies, aiding India's shift towards sustainable transportation. The initial phase of the program was approved for a duration of two years, starting from April 1, 2015.
Following the successful execution of the program, the second phase -- FAME-II -- commenced in 2019 with a budget of INR 11,500 crore to offer incentives for electric vehicles, covering two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, electric buses, and EV public charging stations.
In total, there are currently 25,202 public charging stations for electric vehicles installed across the country. Karnataka tops the list with 5,765 public EV charging stations, while Maharashtra has 3,728 and Uttar Pradesh comes in at 1,989.
